About SHM
Representing the fastest growing specialty in modern healthcare, the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) is the leading medical society for hospitalists and their patients.
First Survey Since 2019 Covers New Topics, Including Wellbeing and Employee Benefits
On Monday, the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) launched the 2023 State of Hospital Medicine (SoHM) Survey and is seeking participants to contribute to the collective understanding of the state of the field. Results from the Survey will be analyzed and compiled into the 2023 SoHM Report to provide critical data that hospital medicine group leaders around the country can use to inform operations and management decisions.
“This is the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic started that we are conducting the full survey of operations of hospital medicine groups,” says Joshua Lapps, MA, Director of Policy and Practice Management at SHM. “We are hoping the 2023 Report will shed light on new perspectives and data that tells the story of hospital medicine and give group leaders invaluable tools to help guide their decision-making.”
The 2023 Survey includes questions on new data points, including wellbeing and burnout, employee benefits, and Medicare pay-for-performance and alternative payment models. Additional data collected in the Survey cover staffing, scheduling, compensation and benefits, production and billing, and more.
Multi-site and single-site hospital medicine groups are encouraged to participate to synthesize the most comprehensive and accurate snapshot of hospital medicine. This year, the Survey features enhanced skip logic and multi-site data collection tool to enhance user experience and increase efficiency.
“The State of Hospital Medicine Survey collects vital data that allows hospital medicine leaders to strengthen the backbone of care delivery,” explains Romil Chadha, MD, FACP, MBA, MPH, SFHM, Division Chief of Hospital Medicine at UK HealthCare in Lexington, KY, and SHM member. “By coming together as a community through organizations like the Society of Hospital Medicine, we can tap into our peers’ collective knowledge and experience, amplifying our ability to serve and advocate for hospitalists.”
The resulting 2023 SoHM Report will be available later this year in a variety of formats: print only, a bundle of print and digital, and digital only. Special discounts are available for SHM members. Participants will receive complimentary and early access to the electronic version of the 2023 SoHM Report and discounts on additional copies.
The SoHM Survey is open through February 10, 2023. Participation from groups across the nation is crucial to the resulting Report’s relevance and success. For more information, FAQs, and the link to participate, visit hospitalmedicine.org/sohm.
