Longtime Society Member, Medical Writer and Pediatric Hospitalist to Bring Fresh Vision to Expand Publication’s Reach
Today, the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) is pleased to announce the appointment of Weijen Chang, MD, SFHM, FAAP as the editor-in-chief of The Hospitalist, SHM’s official monthly newsmagazine.
“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Chang as our new editor-in-chief during a time that requires timely and accurate hospital medicine news more than ever,” said Danielle Scheurer, MD, MSCR, SFHM, president-elect of the SHM’s Board of Directors, outgoing editor-in-chief of The Hospitalist and chair of the search committee for the new editor. “As the previous pediatric editor and a respected volunteer leader in the hospitalist community, he will bring a fresh, informed vision to The Hospitalist.”
As a longtime member of SHM, Dr. Chang is med-peds certified has a deep understanding of the publication’s critical role in communicating all facets of SHM’s work in advancing the field of hospital medicine both in print and online. Not only has he contributed as pediatric editor, but he has actively written for The Hospitalist, including nearly 30 articles since the newsmagazine’s inception. Dr. Chang attended Duke University’s medicine-pediatrics residency program in Durham, NC, after graduating from New York Medical College in Valhalla, NY.
“I am honored to take this role with The Hospitalist and continue the exceptional work of Dr. Scheurer and her predecessors,” said Dr. Chang. “The Hospitalist serves as a window into SHM’s vision for the future of hospital medicine, and I am excited to expand its reach on multiple platforms through additional collaborations.”
In addition to his work with The Hospitalist, Dr. Chang has also served as Associate Editor of the Pediatric Hospital Medicine Core Competencies, due out later this year, as well as an ad-hoc reviewer for SHM’s peer-reviewed Journal of Hospital Medicine. Dr. Chang is the current Chair of the Pediatric Special Interest Group, a member of the Strategic Communications Committee and has served as faculty at multiple SHM annual conferences.
Dr. Chang is currently the Chief of the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine and Vice-Chair of Clinical Affairs at Baystate Children’s Hospital in Springfield, MA, where he also serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at UMass Medical School Baystate.
