The Society of Hospital Medicine Honors Benji K. Mathews, MD, MBA, SFHM, With 2023 Award of Excellence: Clinical Leadership for Physicians

Dr. Mathews Supports the Growing Arena of Hospital at Home and Innovation in Hospital Medicine

The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) recently announced the recipients of its 2023 Awards of Excellence, honoring hospitalists who are advancing hospital medicine through innovation, education, and advocacy.

“Hospital medicine continues to grow at a rapid pace, and we need leaders and innovators in the field to ensure that its future remains bright for years to come,” explains Eric E. Howell, MD, MHM, Chief Executive Officer of the Society of Hospital Medicine. “This year’s Awards of Excellence recipients are among those who have risen to the challenge and contributed not only to the advancement of hospital medicine, but to the overall state of healthcare nationwide.”

Benji K. Mathews, MD, MBA, SFHM, is this year’s recipient in the “Excellence in Clinical Leadership for Physicians” category. Dr. Mathews is known as a master clinician with extensive expertise in diagnostic reasoning and point of care ultrasound. He has led clinical innovations with novel care models, peer support programs, ultrasound, telemedicine, and supporting the growing arena of hospital at home. He also devotes considerable time to mentorship and faculty development.

When COVID-19 hit, Dr. Mathews was tapped as the lead physician on all operations related to the pandemic in the hospital medicine department. At the same time, he made another pandemic pivot while serving as course director for SHM’s annual conference in 2020, helping to turn the meeting into a virtual gathering.

Within SHM, Dr. Mathews is a past president of the Minnesota Chapter and is active locally, nationally, and internationally. He serves on the Practice Management and POCUS Steering Committees, Executive Council of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Group and as the Chair for the Research, Innovations, Vignettes program. He is also a Senior Fellow in Hospital Medicine.

Dr. Mathews is the Department Chair of Hospital Medicine and Division Head at Regions Hospital with HealthPartners in Minnesota. He is an Associate Professor of Medicine with a passion for education, innovation, care delivery, and quality.
