Submitting Work to SHM's Publications

SHM values our members’ contributions to the field of hospital medicine and wants to help them share their stories with the broader hospital medicine community. SHM is home to a respected portfolio of publications that aims to inform all members of the hospital medicine team in a variety of article types and styles.

Members often inquire about how their articles, perspectives, and research can be considered for each of these publications. This information below aims to help you determine which channel is right for your submission and how to submit your work for review.

  • The Hospitalist, SHM’s monthly newsmagazine, covers current issues and trends, including evidence-based clinical reviews, ethical concerns, public policy updates and interviews with experts in the field. It reaches more than 35,000 hospitalists, medical residents and healthcare administrators each month. Read more at https://the-hospitalist.org. 

  • The Journal of Hospital Medicine (JHM) is the first and only peer-reviewed journal dedicated to hospital medicine. Free online access is a member-only benefit and includes access to an archive of past issues and supplements dating back to the journal’s inception in 2006. JHM advances excellence in hospital medicine through the dissemination of research, evidence-based clinical care and advocacy for safe, effective patient care and provides print, online only and online-first content for more than 30,000 hospitalists and health care professionals around the world.   • The Hospital Leader, the official blog of SHM, provides timely news and commentary on the most compelling issues in the specialty. In addition to its diverse team of writers, The Hospital Leader features guest bloggers who provide insight and perspective on important topics in hospital medicine. To ensure your submission is considered for your publication of choice, please follow these guidelines:

The Hospitalist

The Hospitalist publishes articles about news, trends and issues in hospital medicine. Every story must present practical, usable information for the publication’s readers — material that is immediately helpful to them in their professional lives.

If you have a story idea, email Managing Editor, Lisa Casinger, at lcasinger@wiley.com with a few paragraphs that includes why readers would value the story, potential experts or sources for the story, and how the story would influence hospital medicine.

To submit a complete story for consideration, please send it to the SHM Communications Department at communications@hospitalmedicine.org. This team will review the story and share it with the editorial team at The Hospitalist. Please review the style guide for authors before submitting.

In addition to the print issue of The Hospitalist, SHM members are also invited to showcase creative writing and art via the online-exclusive "In Your Words" and "In Your Eyes" sections of The Hospitalist's website.

Journal of Hospital Medicine

JHM publishes manuscripts that address the care of hospitalized adults or children. Papers with the highest likelihood of publication use robust research methods to examine questions of importance to the field of adult or pediatric hospital medicine and produce results that will influence clinical practice or healthcare policy.

Broad areas of interest include:

  • Treatments for common inpatient conditions
  • Approaches to improving perioperative care
  • Improving care for hospitalized patients with geriatric or pediatric vulnerabilities (such as mobility problems, or those with complex longitudinal care
  • Evaluation of innovative healthcare delivery or educational models
  • Approaches to improving the quality, safety and value of healthcare across the acute- and post-acute-continuum of care
  • Evaluation of policy and payment changes that affect hospital and post-acute care

Some articles are chosen to receive complementary press releases or are featured in a #JHMChat, a virtual Twitter journal club, which regularly generates anywhere between 2 and 10 million impressions.
